VISITS TO OLD VINEYARDS

photos by Hanneke Schutte

Expect to be dazzled by our oldest Chenin vineyard on a special visit to this decomposed granite vineyard of a mere one hectare of vines, much of it planted in the 1920s, at the foot of Bothmaskop Mountain in Stellenbosch’s Jonkershoek Valley. In close proximity to our Congress venue, this vineyard visit will be offered in partnership with the Old VIne Project who have been working with it since 2006 doing continuous work to prolong its life with remarkable results.

Taste the exclusive Mev. Kirsten wine that is vinified slightly differently from other whites in the Old Vine range, such as the Chenin Blanc of Skurfberg in the Swartland, to produce a wine unique in its acidity with bright fruit albeit with structure and firmness.

The tour will provide an oversight of the significance, history and viticultural insights from the learning and experience that they had with working with this vineyard. An interactive experience that will shed light on the story of the Old Vine Project and its collaborative role with the Chenin Blanc Association of South Africa, in the journey of producing South African Chenin Blanc wines of outstanding quality and international recognition. Not to be missed!

MASTERCLASS IN CHENIN

Masterclass.jpeg

Chenin Blanc comes in an almost infinite variety of wine styles and is deeply expressive of its terroir whilst also sensitive and responsive to winemaking culture and technique.

Our masterclass will be an exposé of Chenin Blanc wines from around the world, from it’s native French Loire Valley Wines with it’s various appellations, but also the exciting Chenin blancs from the New World regions, such as the various wine growing regions of South Africa, including amongst others Stellenbosch, Swartland, Breedekloof, Franschhoek and our cool climate region.

These wines will be compared to Chenin Blancs from Australia, United States, India and a few other special selected wines in a complete and exclusive Masterclass led by stalwarts of industry, a unique selection of emerging newcomers, makers of perennial favourites as well as rare, fine wine Chenins.
